COP29: Wanhua Chemical Unveils Innovations Advancing Carbon-Neutral Supply Chains

At COP29 in Azerbaijan (November 11–22), Wanhua Chemical unveiled groundbreaking technologies and sustainable transformation models aimed at achieving a carbon-free future across multiple industries, including energy, chemicals, home appliances, and industrial parks. In collaboration with industry organizations, the company addressed pressing global challenges such as environmental pollution and climate change.

Advancing a Zero-Carbon Future

Recycling Waste Heat for Carbon Reduction

The Hehai Comprehensive Energy Project introduced the first integrated intelligent thermal energy technology, leveraging innovations like corrugated plate absorption heat pumps, centrifugal heat pumps, and mechanical vapor recompression (MVR). This system recycles waste heat from Wanhua’s Yantai Industrial Park to supply clean heating for the city and improve energy efficiency. In 2023, the project achieved heating coverage of 10 million square meters and aims to expand to 64 million square meters annually, cutting coal use by 2.6 million tons. This scalable model enhances air quality while reducing emissions.

Recycling Innovations for MDI Production

Wanhua’s diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) technology addresses wastewater and carbon emissions. By recycling high-concentration amine-containing waste brine, the company reduces brine emissions by 3 million tons and carbon emissions by 140,000 tons annually. Additionally, its hydrogen chloride (HCl) oxidation cycle technology transforms HCl into high-purity chlorine, cutting electricity usage by 80% and saving 710 million kWh annually, which lowers CO2 emissions by approximately 700,000 tons.

Polyurethane Foam Recycling

In tackling the challenges of waste plastics, Wanhua’s alcoholysis technology enables the recycling of polyurethane foam, recovering up to 30% of polyol without compromising product quality. This innovation addresses the issue of over 5 million tons of foam waste in the home appliance sector, drawing interest from leading global brands.

Functional Innovations for Daily Life

Wanhua integrates sustainability into everyday products:

•  Furniture: MDI-based adhesives and formaldehyde-free furniture offer improved air quality.

• Sports: Materials like bio-based TPU and Nylon 12 enhance comfort.

• Optical Materials: High-performance solutions such as light-guiding polycarbonate cater to electronics, automotive, and lighting industries.

• Personal Care: High-purity rose alcohol and menthol provide premium fragrances.

• Medical Devices: Durable, medical-grade materials meet the demands of healthcare.

By fostering low-carbon travel, energy-efficient building, and environmentally friendly consumer goods, Wanhua Chemical exemplifies leadership in sustainable innovation. These efforts are a testament to its mission to transform lives through chemistry, paving the way for a cleaner, greener future.
