ComEd is accelerating the electric vehicle (EV) revolution in northern Illinois with the announcement of $100 million in rebates for 2025. This substantial investment, unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show, aims to remove financial barriers to EV adoption and significantly expand charging infrastructure across the region. The rebates cover a range of initiatives, from residential charger installations to fleet vehicle purchases and the development of public charging stations.

This funding boost builds upon ComEd's successful 2024 program and reinforces its commitment to supporting Illinois' ambitious EV goals, as outlined in the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA), which targets 1 million EVs on the road by 2030. Governor JB Pritzker emphasized the importance of accessibility in the clean energy transition, stating, "Thanks to rebate programs like these, it's never been more affordable for Illinois residents to buy and drive an electric vehicle."

The 2025 rebate program allocates $53 million for business and public sector EV fleet purchases. This includes small businesses looking to electrify even a single vehicle, regardless of size or weight class. Nearly $38 million is earmarked for "make ready" infrastructure upgrades, essential for installing Level 2 and Level 3 (DCFC) charging stations for non-residential customers. Homeowners can also benefit, with nearly $9 million available to offset the costs of purchasing and installing Level 2 chargers, with rebates up to $3,750 per charger.

Melissa Washington, SVP of Customer Operations and Strategic Initiatives at ComEd, highlighted the company's focus on grid readiness and customer support during the EV transition. "Building on the success of last year's rebate programs, ComEd is pleased to launch another $100M that will help customers take steps toward adding at-home L2 charging, fleet EV projects for fleets of any size, and to catalyze more investment in building a network of regional public and private charging to accommodate the growing demand for EVs in northern Illinois.”

A key feature of ComEd's EV programs is their emphasis on equity. Over half of the total funds are reserved for low-income customers and equity-eligible communities, with higher rebates offered to those residing in or primarily serving these areas. This approach recognizes that the benefits of cleaner air and reduced emissions should be shared by all communities, particularly those historically burdened by pollution.

Since launching its initial EV rebates in 2024, ComEd has witnessed a surge in customer EV projects, funding initiatives in over 300 zip codes and supporting the installation of nearly 3,500 residential and commercial charging ports. The program has also facilitated the addition of over 200 new and pre-owned EV fleet vehicles for municipalities, businesses, and school districts.
