A recent verdict delivered by a jury in the Denver District Court has awarded an electricity distributor a substantial sum of $26.45 million following a lawsuit brought against Xcel Energy. The lawsuit was filed by CORE Electric Cooperative in September 2021 in response to a prolonged power outage that impacted its members in the year 2020. CORE's contention is that the root cause of this extensive outage was Xcel Energy's alleged mismanagement of the Comanche Unit 3 coal-fired power plant, located in Pueblo, Colorado. It's important to note that CORE holds a 25.33% stake in the Comanche 3 plant. Notably, this legal action was taken merely eight days after CORE, previously known as IREA, unveiled its rebranding as CORE Electric. The company takes pride in positioning itself as one of the largest electric distribution cooperatives in the United States.

As detailed in the court documents, CORE Electric's case centers on the assertion that Comanche 3 experienced a year-long shutdown, spanning from January 2020 to January 2021, primarily due to a damaged steam turbine. The complaint places responsibility for this turbine damage on an employee, while also pointing to management's alleged "years of neglect" in maintaining the plant.
