Cloverdale Paint has entered a partnership with Celanese Corporation, a global leader in specialty materials and chemicals, to develop innovative, sustainable paint solutions using Celanese’s carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology. This collaboration will help Cloverdale Paint bring new environmentally friendly products to market by utilizing waste CO2 emissions as raw materials.

Celanese’s CCU technology captures industrial CO2 emissions, which would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, and converts them into methanol building blocks. These methanol components are used in the production of vinyl acetate-based emulsions, an essential ingredient in paint manufacturing. This process significantly reduces reliance on fossil fuels, promotes a circular economy, and decreases carbon emissions compared to conventional manufacturing methods. Through mass balance accounting, the mix of CCU-derived and fossil-fuel-based feedstocks is carefully tracked to ensure transparency in the sustainable content of the final products.

The collaboration underscores both companies' commitment to sustainability and innovation. Through this partnership, Cloverdale Paint will incorporate more than 1 million pounds of CO2 emissions into its products annually, furthering its environmental goals. Darrin Noble, president and COO of Cloverdale Paint, emphasized the company’s dedication to sustainability through its "Green Guarantee." This initiative focuses on using sustainable materials, optimizing processes to reduce waste, and lowering the carbon footprint across all operations. Cloverdale Paint’s products are designed not only for performance and durability but also to promote environmental conservation.

Noble added, “Partnering with Celanese is a significant step forward for both Cloverdale Paint and the paint industry, enabling us to offer solutions that contribute to a greener economy and environmental accountability.”

Kevin Norfleet, global sustainability director at Celanese, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting that it demonstrates the potential of CCU to reduce the carbon footprint of various industries, including paint. He highlighted the role of CCU in fostering a more circular economy by transforming waste emissions into valuable, sustainable feedstocks.

This partnership represents a major advancement in the paint industry’s move toward low-carbon solutions, creating sustainable, high-performance coatings that support environmentally responsible choices.

Celanese is a global leader in specialty materials, providing innovative solutions for a wide range of industries and consumer applications. The company leverages its expertise in chemistry, technology, and commercial operations to deliver value to customers, employees, and shareholders. Dedicated to sustainability, Celanese prioritizes responsible management of its materials and continues to expand its range of sustainable products to address the increasing needs of customers and society. The company also strives to make a positive impact on communities and promote inclusivity within its teams. A Fortune 500 company, Celanese employs approximately 12,400 people worldwide and reported net sales of $10.9 billion in 2023.
