As of December 2023, Clariant has successfully transitioned to a fully per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)-free additive portfolio, marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to sustainability and customer-focused innovation. This proactive move comes in response to tightening global regulations on PFAS and highlights Clariant’s dedication to offering safer, more responsible solutions for industries worldwide.
Clariant’s shift to PFAS-free additives underscores its deep understanding of customer needs and environmental responsibility. By removing PFAS from its entire portfolio, Clariant provides sustainable alternatives that do not compromise performance. This ensures that customers can stay ahead of evolving regulatory requirements while aligning with global trends toward more eco-friendly manufacturing practices.
Anticipating stricter regulations, Clariant completed its transition to PFAS-free additives well before regulatory deadlines. This foresight not only helps safeguard the environment but also ensures that clients can adapt quickly and seamlessly to the upcoming regulatory changes, minimizing disruption to their operations.
Clariant’s portfolio includes innovative PFAS-free solutions like Ceridust 8170 M, a Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-free texturing agent for powder coatings. This product offers superior performance with lower energy usage than traditional PTFE-based alternatives, supporting customers in reducing Scope 1 emissions and achieving significant cost savings. Additionally, Clariant introduced AddWorks PPA, a line of polymer processing aids designed to enhance melt fracture control, optimize extrusion, and ensure high-quality films. These products meet the growing demand for environmentally sustainable additives while complying with stringent environmental regulations.
Stefan Brejc, Global Vice President of the Segment Coatings & Adhesives, highlighted the company’s commitment to innovation: "Our dedication to sustainable chemistry drives us to develop solutions that reduce environmental impact while meeting the performance needs of our customers. The PFAS-free additive portfolio is the result of years of research and collaboration with our partners."
Miao Zhigang, Global Vice President of the Segment Polymer Solutions, echoed this sentiment: "We believe in delivering tomorrow’s solutions today. By eliminating PFAS, we are not just addressing current regulations but anticipating future industry needs, helping our customers remain competitive and responsible."
Clariant’s shift to a PFAS-free additive portfolio represents not just compliance with current regulations but a forward-looking approach to sustainable innovation. Through this strategic move, Clariant ensures that its customers can meet global sustainability goals while maintaining high performance and staying ahead of future regulatory challenges.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have raised significant concerns globally due to their environmental persistence and potential health hazards. With regulatory bodies introducing more stringent controls on PFAS usage, industries are actively looking for safer alternatives.
