Clariant and Technip Energies Unveil Catalyst Breakthrough for Energy-Efficient Styrene Production

Clariant, a global leader in specialty chemicals, has introduced its most advanced ethylbenzene dehydrogenation catalyst yet—StyroMax UL-100. Developed in collaboration with Technip Energies, this next-generation catalyst marks a significant technological leap in styrene production by enabling ultra-low steam-to-oil (S/O) ratios of just 0.76 by weight. This advancement redefines efficiency standards in styrene monomer (SM) manufacturing, offering plant operators the ability to dramatically cut down steam usage without compromising on production output.

StyroMax UL-100 has been specifically designed for flexible deployment, whether through drop-in replacements in existing units, plant revamps, or new grassroots facilities. By integrating seamlessly into Technip Energies’ proprietary styrene technology—licensed through Badger Process Technology—the catalyst enhances both economic and environmental performance for producers.

Historically, the industry has struggled to reduce steam consumption without affecting yield. Previous generations of catalysts typically operated at S/O ratios around 1.02 by weight. The StyroMax UL-100 surpasses this benchmark, allowing for significantly lower ratios while maintaining high catalyst activity and selectivity. This results in reduced energy demand, lower operating costs, and a smaller carbon footprint—key benefits for companies looking to meet stricter sustainability targets.
