Copper Plate prices witnessed divergent trends in Asia as prices declined in China but saw a rise in Japan.  In China, robust downstream demand from automotive electronics and AI industries is offset by oversupply challenges, while Japan sees rising demand from electrical appliances and green energy sectors. Both markets are adapting to shifting operational and economic conditions, with a focus on capacity consolidation and cost efficiency to sustain growth.

Copper Plate prices in China dropped by 1.5%, largely due to increased production spurred by robust export order fulfillment. However, the combination of limited new orders domestically and a sharp rise in copper prices created procurement challenges, leading businesses to maintain minimal, just-in-time stockpiles. The shutdown of Zhejiang Hongma and Shanghai ZHJ Copper plants had a limited impact on market prices as both plants are expected to resume full operations by month-end.

As the 2025 Chinese New Year holiday approaches, Copper Plate enterprises are unlikely to suspend production this year, and the industry's operating rate is expected to increase significantly compared to the same period in 2024.

In China, downstream sectors of the Copper Plate industry, including automotive electronics and the server industry, are experiencing robust growth, supported by national policies. The rise of the AI industry further enhances the sector's prospects. However, the Copper Plate industry faces significant challenges due to a severe oversupply caused by rapid capacity expansion in recent years. Looking ahead, the industry's development will center on consolidating capacity, reducing costs and boosting product competitiveness to address these challenges.

In Japan, Copper Plate prices increased by 0.5% in late January, driven by higher demand from the electrical appliances sector. The Japan Electrical Manufacturers' Association (JEMA) reported a 6% year-on-year rise in air conditioner shipments for 2024, while the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) noted a 2.6% increase in flat-screen TV shipments compared to the previous year.

In January, JX Advanced Metals' copper quotation, which serves as Japan's benchmark price, increased due to growing demand from sectors such as electric vehicles and solar farms, coupled with the impact of a weaker yen. JX Metals has recently finalized negotiations to raise prices for copper and copper alloy products, including Copper Plates. Faced with rising operational costs essential for maintaining business continuity, the company has found it necessary to transfer these increased expenses to its customers. Consequently, JX Metals has been implementing price hikes across its product range.

ChemAnalyst expects the Copper Plate market in Japan to experience consistent growth, fueled by increasing demand from electrical appliances, electric vehicles, and renewable energy industries. Export markets and operational cost pressures will influence Copper Plate pricing in the short term.
