United States: Cargill has recently partnered with H2 Green Steel, showcasing the increasing demand for near-zero emission Steel. The collaboration is a significant achievement for Cargill as it aligns with its goal to build a sustainable and ethical ferrous supply chain that contributes to the betterment of society. Lee Kirk, the managing director of Cargill Metals, expressed his excitement about this strategic move towards sustainability, citing customer interest in low CO2 Steel. H2 Green Steel's pioneering efforts in producing green Steel at scale have positioned them as one of the forerunners in the industry. Announcement marks yet another milestone in advancing sustainability goals.
Cargill Metals plays a vital role in linking various sections of the ferrous supply chain, connecting iron ore miners with Steel mills across the globe. The company is dedicated to achieving its sustainability objectives through numerous initiatives, including collaborations that aim to produce cleaner products with reduced CO2 emissions. Its partnership with H2 Green Steel is a prime example of such an effort, as Cargill seeks to enable its clients to achieve their sustainability and climate targets by providing them with a dependable and responsible source of eco-friendly products.
In 2021, H2 Green Steel was established with the aim of expediting the decarbonization of industries that are challenging to curb emissions. Focusing on the Steel industry - one of the most polluting industrial sectors - the company is constructing a greenfield Steel plant in Boden that will operate entirely on renewable electricity. By utilizing a giga-scale electrolyzer, the plant will produce its own green hydrogen and thereby convert iron ore into green sponge iron via direct reduction. This green sponge iron will be utilized in the production of green Steel, achieving an emission reduction of up to 95% compared to conventional Steelmaking processes involving coke and coal in a blast furnace.
H2 Green Steel's aim for a responsible and sustainable supply chain for ferrous metals has led them to partner with Cargill. This partnership presents opportunities for enhancing both upstream and downstream emission reductions in their distribution relationship. Mark Bula, Commercial Head of Boden Steel at H2 Green Steel, recognizes that Cargill's global reach will aid in making their products available to other markets beyond the EU as demand continues to grow.
