Cargill, a global leader in oilseed processing, announced on 16 July 2024 that it has surpassed the 50 percent completion milestone in constructing its new canola facility at the Global Transportation Hub in West Regina, Saskatchewan. The facility, which broke ground in July 2022, is expected to open in 2025. It will have the capacity to process 1 million metric tons of canola annually, producing crude canola oil for food and biofuel markets, as well as canola meal for animal feed.

" Jeff Vassart, president of Cargill Canada, emphasized the significance of integrating the Regina facility into Cargill's network, highlighting its role in connecting the Canadian canola industry with expanding domestic and global markets for vegetable oil, high-quality meal, and biofuels. Despite navigating challenges in the current construction landscape and overcoming initial setbacks, Cargill remains steadfast in its commitment to establishing a leading choice for canola growers in the area. Additionally, the company is dedicated to supporting the decarbonization efforts within the global food and fuel supply chain."

To enhance rail and road infrastructure around the new plant, Cargill has recently acquired over 400 acres near the Global Transportation Hub. This acquisition will improve connectivity to existing rail lines, ensuring efficient access to destination markets for both meal pellets and canola oil. Furthermore, it will expand the site's capability to receive canola seed shipments into Regina as required, presenting a fresh destination for farmers across Western Canada.
