Calysta, a leading innovator in protein production, is focusing on European growth following the first major shipment of its FeedKind® Pet protein to a warehouse in Poland. This marks a significant step after the launch of FeedKind Aqua earlier this year. FeedKind Pet, a non-GMO protein made without animal or plant ingredients, is now available for pet food manufacturers across Europe. It can be incorporated into dry kibble, canned food, or treats. Produced via fermentation by Calysseo, Calysta’s joint venture with Adisseo, the protein is now commercially available. Earlier this year, Calysseo received MARA approval from China for aquaculture feeds and secured an export permit enabling international shipments. Calysseo operates two of the largest fermenters globally, each with a 10,000-tonne capacity.

Herman Sloot, Vice President of Commercial Development at Calysta, highlighted the innovation: “For the first time, Europe’s pet food sector can choose a fermented protein that is both nutritious and environmentally friendly. FeedKind Pet is now globally available at scale.”

With a significant rise in pet ownership and increasing demand for sustainable, animal-free proteins, FeedKind Pet meets this need with its nutrient-dense, vegetarian protein that includes a complete amino acid profile and postbiotic properties for gut health. Despite being a vegetarian protein, it is highly palatable for both dogs and cats. The initial shipments from Calysseo’s plant in China have been delivered to European pet food producers. This is the first international export by Calysta’s joint venture with Adisseo, marking a significant milestone in global operations.

FeedKind Pet is approved for use in the EU, UK, Canada, and other regions. Sloot highlighted that progress is underway in the U.S., where the product has already received GRAS status for aquaculture feeds and there are plans to extend this approval to pet food.

Alan Shaw, CEO and Co-Founder of Calysta, emphasized, “Calysta and its partners have established a robust global supply chain. FeedKind protein is the result of a decade of effort, offering a transformative solution for aquaculture and pet food industries. We are producing protein sustainably with a fraction of the resources needed by traditional methods. FeedKind represents a perfect blend of nature and human innovation.”

In addition to pet food, FeedKind is also approved for use in aquaculture and livestock feeds, providing a functional, eco-friendly ingredient that supports biodiversity and global food security.

Calysta, Inc., based in San Mateo, CA, is a biotechnology company dedicated to ensuring food security for the world’s growing population. Calysta focuses on producing unlimited protein by fermenting low-cost, land-free carbon sources, creating sustainable protein ingredients that contribute to the global food supply and pave the way for new feed and food products.
