The Minstry of Chemicals and Fertilizers notified through a Gazette that all the imported caustic soda shipment from April 2018 to have mandatory BIS certification as per IS 252: 2013. To ensure the quality of standard the ministry has mandated the certicate on import and export of caustic soda. The intiative will reduce the consumption of inferior grade caustic soda containing mercury as an impurity, mercury being a hazardous substance can severly affect the health, so Ministry has mandate to have BIS cerficate to ensure the quality of caustic soda. All the importers from overseas countries need to have the certificate so that they can import caustic soda in India.
