Braskem, the leading polyolefins producer in the Americas and a trailblazer in biopolymers, has introduced its innovative bio-circular polypropylene (PP), branded as WENEW. This cutting-edge material is set to advance sustainability in the restaurant and snack food industries. Made from used cooking oil (UCO), WENEW is a certified bio-circular product under the ISCC Plus mass-balance certification, marking a significant leap towards a more sustainable economy by reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Braskem’s bio-circular PP fosters circularity within the food sector by repurposing UCO, thus supporting environmental sustainability and minimizing fossil fuel dependence. This new polypropylene matches the properties and performance of traditional PP, ensuring a smooth transition for clients who wish to adopt more sustainable practices without compromising on quality.

Bill Diebold, Vice President of Braskem America Polyolefins, noted that the bio-circular polypropylene is being provided to multiple converters in the Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) sector. This includes QSR chains, retail food suppliers, traditional restaurants, and snack food companies that aim to enhance their sustainability efforts through the reuse of cooking oil. The versatile material is applicable for a wide range of uses, including food packaging, flexible packaging like films, and consumer goods.

The environmental benefits of bio-circular PP are significant. By replacing fossil-based propylene with UCO-derived propylene, it promotes a circular economy and addresses pressing environmental issues. UCO is collected and processed upstream to create certified bio-circular ISCC Plus propylene, which is then converted into polypropylene by Braskem’s partners throughout the value chain, closing the loop of sustainability.

As a mass-balanced product, Braskem’s bio-circular PP retains the same characteristics and performance as conventional PP, allowing it to seamlessly integrate into existing production processes and recycling systems. This means that companies can adopt the new material without disrupting their current operations.

Courtney Keller, Sustainability Commercial Manager at Braskem America, emphasized the importance of this launch in driving sustainability within the restaurant and snack food sectors. “By adopting our bio-circular PP, companies can significantly contribute to circularity and reduce their environmental impact. We invite everyone to join us in embracing a greener future with this innovative solution,” Keller said.

Braskem is committed to leading global efforts in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction and carbon capture through its use of renewable, biobased raw materials. The company aims to cut scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 15% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Braskem, a prominent player in the petrochemical industry, is dedicated to integrating social, environmental, and governance considerations into its business practices. The company is committed to serving its community, team members, shareholders, and other stakeholders, with innovation serving as the cornerstone of its approach to creating value and driving its initiatives.
