Lummus Technology, a global leader in process technologies and energy solutions, has been awarded a significant contract by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to provide multiple technologies for a new large-scale ethylene plant and associated downstream units in Bina, Madhya Pradesh, India. This project is a vital part of BPCL’s Bina Petrochemicals and Refinery Expansion Plan, aimed at enhancing the company’s position in the Indian petrochemical sector. Once completed, the plant will produce polymer-grade ethylene and propylene to support downstream polymer production units, with capacities of 1,200 KTA for ethylene and 550 KTA for propylene.

The new ethylene facility will be equipped with advanced technologies from Lummus, incorporating both their industry-leading light olefins production capabilities and their newly integrated water treatment solutions. According to Leon de Bruyn, President and CEO of Lummus Technology, this combination ensures a comprehensive and sustainable offering that will not only support efficient and reliable light olefin production but also contribute to lowering greenhouse gas emissions. These solutions align with BPCL’s goals to strengthen its competitiveness in India’s growing petrochemical market and meet global sustainability standards.

Lummus Technology has consistently been a market leader in light olefins technologies, holding a dominant position in the industry. Since 2000, the company has secured nearly half of all new project awards in this sector. Lummus has licensed over 200 ethylene plants worldwide, representing about 45 percent of global ethylene production capacity. This extensive experience and market presence highlight Lummus’ expertise and the trust major players like BPCL place in its solutions.

The ethylene plant in Bina represents a significant investment for BPCL, aligning with India’s broader strategy to boost domestic petrochemical production and reduce reliance on imports. The facility is expected to play a crucial role in supporting downstream polymer production, which is essential for various industries including packaging, automotive, and construction. The project underscores BPCL’s commitment to expanding its operations and diversifying its product portfolio within the petrochemical sector.

In addition to its technological prowess in light olefins production, Lummus’ recent acquisition of advanced water treatment capabilities adds another layer of value to the project. This integration of technologies allows for optimized resource management and aligns with global trends toward more environmentally sustainable industrial practices. As environmental regulations tighten and the demand for cleaner energy solutions rises, the combination of efficient production processes and sustainable water management will be key differentiators for BPCL in a competitive market.
