bp Trinidad and Tobago (bpTT) has announced the successful commencement of gas production from its Cypre development. This project, a key component of bp's global strategy, marks the second of ten major projects slated for startup between 2025 and 2027.
The Cypre development, bpTT's third subsea project, involves seven wells tied back to the existing Juniper platform. At its peak, the project is projected to deliver approximately 45,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boed), equivalent to around 250 million standard cubic feet of gas daily. The initial phase, comprising four wells, has been completed, with the second phase expected to come online in the latter half of 2025.
William Lin, EVP gas and low carbon energy at bp, emphasized the company's commitment to consistent execution and safe delivery of major projects. "Our focus is on consistent execution and safe delivery of major projects like Cypre," said Lin. "The second of 10 major projects across our global portfolio that we expect to start up by 2027, Cypre is also the first of a series of projects we will be bringing online in Trinidad to deliver gas to the nation and add value for bp."
bpTT president David Campbell highlighted the project's strategic importance in maximizing production from the company's shallow water acreage. "Cypre is another key milestone in bpTT's strategy to maximize production from our shallow water acreage using existing infrastructure," Campbell stated. "The project not only reinforces our commitment to maintaining production but also plays a crucial role in satisfying our existing gas supply commitments. Cypre represents a significant investment in the country's energy sector. We are proud to be part of this journey and look forward to continuing our collaboration with Government and other stakeholders to unlock Trinidad and Tobago's energy future."
The Cypre project is expected to make a substantial contribution towards bp's goal of achieving a combined peak net production of 250,000 boed from its ten major projects worldwide. This development follows the successful commencement of the second development phase of the Raven field offshore Egypt, marking Cypre as bp's second major startup in 2025.
The project aligns with bp's financial objectives, meeting the company's expected returns from upstream projects and fitting within its capital expenditure plans. This successful startup underscores bpTT's dedication to enhancing its production capabilities and supporting Trinidad and Tobago's energy needs.
The delivery of first gas from Cypre is seen as a pivotal step in securing a reliable and consistent gas supply for Trinidad and Tobago. This development is expected to have a positive impact on the nation's economy.
