Berlin Packaging has joined forces with the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR), a US-based nonprofit organization, to initiate a sample bottle program aimed at facilitating the development and testing of recyclable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic packaging.

Berlin Packaging, a provider of hybrid packaging solutions, is a proud member of the APR. This collaborative program seeks to streamline the process of designing and evaluating PET plastic packaging for recyclability, a critical consideration in today's sustainability-focused landscape.

As part of this initiative, Berlin Packaging will be responsible for supplying small quantities of PET bottles to undergo comprehensive recyclability test protocols. These tests will be conducted at third-party testing laboratories, with the ultimate goal of securing the APR's coveted "Design for Recyclability Recognition." This recognition serves as an essential guide to help companies ensure that the design of their packaging is not only recyclable but also capable of being transformed into high-quality, post-consumer recycled content.

John Standish, a technical consultant in APR, explained that the testing process mandates the use of clear PET bottles made from a known virgin resin to conduct APR test protocols. He pointed out that acquiring these test bottles, typically ranging from 20 to 100 units per test variable, can pose a challenge for some companies. Standish noted that while these companies may excel in areas such as labels or adhesives, they might lack expertise in sourcing PET bottles. He emphasized that the quest for the appropriate bottles can be both costly and time-consuming. However, Standish also highlighted that their partnership with Berlin Packaging plays a crucial role in surmounting this challenge, making it more manageable and expediting the process of obtaining PET test bottles for companies seeking APR Design Recognition.

The APR Design for Recyclability Recognition is a vital component of this partnership, as it provides third-party validation that the design of PET bottles or packaging components complies with North American recycling standards. This recognition holds significant value in today's eco-conscious market, where sustainability and recycling are paramount concerns for consumers and regulatory bodies alike.

Balaji Jayaseelan, who serves as the Vice President of Sustainability at Berlin Packaging, stressed the company's commitment to spearheading the evolution of sustainable packaging. He articulated that their mission involves fostering a culture of sustainability throughout their entire value chain, extending from suppliers and customers to the local communities where they operate and allied organizations. Jayaseelan underscored that Berlin's collaboration with APR aligns with their mission and extends their partnerships with organizations that share their dedication to promoting sustainability.

This collaboration between Berlin Packaging and the Association of Plastic Recyclers reflects a commitment to advancing sustainable practices within the packaging industry. By providing a framework for evaluating the recyclability of PET plastic packaging, the initiative aims to reduce the environmental impact of packaging materials and contribute to a more sustainable future. It also demonstrates the importance of partnerships and industry-wide cooperation in addressing critical environmental and recycling challenges.
