BASF has launched Ultrason E 2010 BMB, the world's first biomass-balanced polyethersulfone (PESU). This groundbreaking material offers a drop-in solution for industries seeking to reduce their environmental footprint without compromising performance.
Ultrason E 2010 BMB addresses the growing demand for sustainable alternatives by replacing fossil feedstock with renewable resources derived from organic waste. This is achieved through a certified biomass balance approach, verified under the ISCC PLUS standard. By introducing renewable feedstock at the beginning of the production process, BASF attributes the corresponding amount to the final Ultrason grade, resulting in a product with a significantly lower product carbon footprint (PCF) compared to its standard counterpart.
The production of Ultrason E 2010 BMB leverages 100% green electricity at BASF's Ludwigshafen plant, further enhancing its sustainability profile. The company is committed to transparency, providing customers with detailed PCF data to support their own sustainability assessments. This enables industries ranging from household and catering to automotive, electronics, healthcare, and water management to make informed choices and contribute to a more circular economy.
Ultrason E 2010 BMB is poised to revolutionize various applications, including reusable bottles, microwave dishes, automotive fuel parts, medical devices, E&E connectors, and consumer electronics. By offering a high-performance, sustainable alternative, BASF empowers industries to achieve their sustainability goals while maintaining the quality and performance they expect.
A key advantage of Ultrason E 2010 BMB is its seamless integration into existing manufacturing processes. As a drop-in solution, it maintains the same properties, performance, machine processability, and certifications as standard Ultrason materials. This eliminates the need for customers to re-qualify their applications or invest in new processing lines for injection molding or extrusion.
"BASF is the first company to offer biomass-balanced polyethersulfone," stated Erik Gubbels, Global Business Development Ultrason at BASF. "With this addition to our innovative Ultrason portfolio, we want to enable our customers’ green transformation towards more circular solutions – and this as early as possible on their journey to meet their sustainability targets."
Specifically, 50% of the fossil raw materials required for Ultrason E 2010 are replaced with ISCC PLUS certified bio-circular feedstocks, resulting in an attributed amount of 39% to the final Ultrason E 2010 BMB grade.
BASF's commitment to sustainability is reinforced by its robust PCF calculation methodology. The company has developed a digital application to calculate cradle-to-gate PCFs, encompassing all product-related greenhouse gas emissions from raw material sourcing to factory gate output. This comprehensive approach ensures accurate and reliable PCF data, validated by third-party certification.
