BASF Care Chemicals has introduced Trilon® G, a new sustainable chelating agent based on GLDA (glutamic acid diacetate) technology. This launch strengthens BASF’s expanding portfolio of environmentally responsible solutions and supports the rising global demand for sustainable cleaning products in both the Home Care and Industrial & Institutional (I&I) cleaning sectors.
Trilon G complements BASF’s existing chelating agents, including MGDA (methylglycinediacetic acid) and EDTA (tetrasodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate). It is designed to enhance the performance of cleaning formulations by improving surfactant efficiency through effective water softening. The product’s strong chelating capabilities allow it to bind efficiently to metal ions, significantly improving cleaning results across various applications such as manual dishwashing and laundry detergents.
Engineered to meet diverse industry needs, Trilon G offers formulation flexibility, enabling manufacturers to develop products that achieve a balance between high performance, cost efficiency and environmental sustainability.
Highlighting BASF’s commitment to sustainability, Trilon G is partially biobased, consisting of approximately 56% renewable carbon atoms. The active ingredient, GLDA, is readily biodegradable—achieving more than 60% degradation within 28 days according to the OECD 301D test. This classification supports the shift toward safer, greener ingredients in household and industrial formulations.
“Trilon G represents a major advancement in our mission to deliver sustainable and high-performance solutions,” said Amita Gupta, vice president, business management Home Care and I&I Cleaning Americas at BASF. “This innovative chelating agent improves cleaning effectiveness while also addressing the growing need for environmentally conscious alternatives in the cleaning industry. We are excited to add this product to our portfolio and support our customers in developing next-generation cleaning solutions.”
As consumer preferences continue to shift toward eco-friendly products, Trilon G enables product developers to meet regulatory requirements and customer expectations without compromising on cleaning efficiency. Its biodegradable profile and renewable content help companies reduce their environmental impact, making it an ideal solution for forward-thinking brands in the cleaning space.
The launch of Trilon G reinforces BASF’s strategic direction of driving innovation through sustainability. It underscores the company’s ongoing investment in green chemistry and its support for customers in delivering high-performing, sustainable solutions across the home care and industrial cleaning markets.
