BASF has announced plans to discontinue the production of adipic acid, cyclododecanone (CDon), and cyclopentanone (CPon) at its Ludwigshafen site. The production facilities for CDon and CPon will be shut down in the first half of 2025, followed by the closure of the remaining adipic acid production later that year. This decision is part of BASF's ongoing strategic review of its Ludwigshafen operations to maintain competitiveness in response to evolving market conditions.

Earlier, BASF had already reduced its adipic acid production capacity at Ludwigshafen as part of broader adjustments to the Verbund structures announced in February 2023. Despite these reductions, some adipic acid production continued to ensure a steady supply of raw materials for CDon and CPon production. Now, BASF has decided to cease deliveries of CDon and CPon, working closely with customers to minimize disruption.

Approximately 180 employees will be impacted by the plant closures. BASF is committed to supporting these employees in finding new employment opportunities within the BASF Group. Dr. Stephan Kothrade, a Member of the Board of Executive Directors and Chief Technology Officer at BASF SE, emphasized that this decision is aimed at sustaining profitability across BASF's Verbund value chains by adapting production structures to the changing market landscape. The company will remain in close contact with its customers to manage the transition smoothly.

BASF will continue producing adipic acid at its facilities in Onsan, South Korea, and through its joint venture in Chalampé, France. The closures at Ludwigshafen are part of a broader strategy to transform the site for the long term, according to Dr. Katja Scharpwinkel, Member of the Board of Executive Directors, Industrial Relations Director of BASF SE, and Director of the Ludwigshafen Site. She reiterated BASF's commitment to helping affected employees find new roles within the company.

CDon is a key raw material for producing lauryl lactam, which is essential for manufacturing the high-performance plastic polyamide 12 (PA 12). It is also used in the synthesis of musk fragrances and UV stabilizers. CPon, on the other hand, serves as a building block for synthesizing crop protection agents, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and special fragrances, and is also used as a solvent in semiconductor manufacturing. Adipic acid is crucial for producing polyamides, polyurethanes, coatings, and adhesives.

BASF creates chemistry for a sustainable future by integrating economic success with environmental protection and social responsibility. With approximately 112,000 employees worldwide, BASF supports customers across nearly all industries and countries. Their portfolio spans six segments: Chemicals, Materials, Industrial Solutions, Surface Technologies, Nutrition & Care, and Agricultural Solutions.
