BASF has announced the expansion of its sustainable product portfolio at its Lemförde, Germany production site on December 3. The company has achieved certification according to the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS program for the production of biomass-balanced thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs). Additionally, BASF successfully completed its annual recertification according to REDcert2 for numerous thermoplastics and polyurethane systems.
This move signifies BASF's commitment to supporting its customers in achieving their sustainability goals. By utilizing the mass balance approach, the company can replace fossil resources with renewable and recycled raw materials within its Verbund production system. This allocation translates to products with a lower CO2 footprint for customers, without compromising on formulation or quality.
Global Standards for Sustainability
The ISCC PLUS certification guarantees that the certified share of fossil raw materials is replaced by renewable ones throughout the entire value chain. This enables BASF to offer mass balance certificates to its customers for specific TPU products. Furthermore, the REDcert2 standard ensures the proper allocation of renewable resources within BASF's value chain. Both certifications are internationally recognized and awarded based on independent audits.
“With this drop-in solution, our customers receive a product with a reduced CO2 footprint compared to conventional materials, without requiring any technical changes on their part. Reducing the need for fossil resources and greenhouse gas emissions are highly relevant for today's producers and consumers,” says Artur Pfeif, Product Management TPU at BASF Performance Materials Europe.
“With this important step, complete transparency regarding high sustainability requirements can be achieved across the entire value chain, also for our customers,” summarizes Eileen Orlich, Sustainability Management at BASF Performance Materials Europe.
BASF's Commitment to Sustainability
BASF's Performance Materials division is a leader in the drive towards sustainable plastics. The company collaborates with customers worldwide to develop innovations that benefit various sectors, including transportation, consumer goods, and construction. Their research and development efforts focus on the entire life cycle of plastics, encompassing production (MAKE), application (USE), and recycling (RECYCLE).
This certification for biomass-balanced TPUs exemplifies BASF’s dedication to the MAKE phase, specifically improving how plastics are manufactured through a sustainable choice of raw materials.
