BASF and Exterra Carbon Solutions have teamed up to create a large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in Quebec, Canada. BASF is a major chemical company, while Exterra Carbon Solutions specializes in carbon sequestration.

This collaboration aims to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from hard-to-abate industries in the province, such as cement, steel, gas-to-power, and waste-to-energy sectors, which contribute nearly 20% of global CO2 emissions according to the International Energy Agency.

The project will leverage the combined expertise of both companies. BASF will use its OASE technology to capture CO2 from industrial processes. Exterra will then use its Reactive Oxide to Carbonate (ROC) system to safely store the capture CO2 underground, turning it into a stable mineral. This process is called ex-situ mineralization. This surface-level sequestration approach eliminates the risks associated with underground storage methods.

The project has the potential to significantly contribute to Quebec's decarbonization goals by capturing and permanently storing a substantial amount of CO2. By capturing and storing CO2 emissions, this project will improve air quality in Quebec.

The combined technologies offer a scalable and effective approach to carbon capture and storage, paving the way for wider implementation. The use of surface-level sequestration ensures transparency and safety, eliminating concerns about leakage or reversal.  Exterra will generate validated carbon credits for participating industries, providing additional value.

Olivier Dufresne, CEO and Co-Founder of Exterra said, "This partnership is a major milestone for Exterra, showcasing our commitment to delivering scalable and effective CCS solutions. Our safe, surface-level approach offers a unique and groundbreaking advancement in the fight against climate change."

Todd Spengeman, Business Director, Standard Amines and Gas Treatment of BASF North America said, "This collaboration is a key step for BASF in building a sustainable future. By combining our cutting-edge technologies, we are pushing the boundaries of carbon management and delivering sustainable solutions to our customers."
