Global industrial software leader AVEVA has forged a strategic partnership with Meridian Energy Group Inc. to drive digital transformation and sustainability initiatives. This partnership aims to develop a cutting-edge digital twin for the pioneering full-conversion refinery, which is the first of its kind to be constructed in the U.S. since 1976. Notably, this will also be the inaugural modern "greenfield" advanced technology refinery ever built in the U.S.

This collaboration represents a pivotal advancement in both technological innovation and environmental sustainability within the refining sector. By leveraging advanced digital technologies, the partnership is set to redefine industry standards and drive significant improvements in operational efficiency and eco-friendly practices.

Meridian has chosen CONNECT, AVEVA’s advanced industrial intelligence platform, along with a suite of EPC 4.0 solutions, to establish a comprehensive, data-driven methodology for the engineering and project execution of their new Davis Refinery. Leveraging decades of expertise in plant engineering and operations, Meridian’s executive team is spearheading the adoption of these innovative technologies to address conventional project challenges and unify disparate systems. AVEVA’s EPC 4.0 solutions eliminate data silos, offering real-time visibility across all stages from engineering and design to procurement and construction, thus enhancing the final handover and accelerating time to operational readiness.

Rob McGreevy, Chief Product Officer at AVEVA, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Meridian, highlighting the opportunity to leverage their proven software solutions. He underscored that the project focuses on designing one of the world’s most advanced and environmentally compliant refineries. McGreevy committed to not only meeting industry standards but also supporting the refinery’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions.

Mark Fonda, Meridian’s Chief Technology Officer, highlighted AVEVA's pivotal role in shaping their strategic plan for transitioning the refining industry to lower carbon intensity. He noted that the project represents a significant technological advancement, facilitated by the greenfield nature of the facility and its forward-thinking approach. Fonda emphasized that digital technology will be integral to the project's development and execution, fostering a collaborative and synergistic environment across all disciplines throughout the project's lifecycle. This approach is key to achieving the ambitious goals of reducing carbon emissions and integrating both renewable and traditional feedstocks.

This cloud-based, data-centric approach integrates all engineering disciplines and stakeholders into a single, cohesive platform. By seamlessly connecting various engineering tools, it provides a holistic perspective that boosts project efficiency and transparency throughout the lifecycle. This collaborative strategy not only facilitates early identification and mitigation of risks but also equips stakeholders with advanced handover capabilities. This integrated approach helps avoid common capital expenditure pitfalls associated with traditional facilities, ultimately driving improved project outcomes and operational success.

Meridian is revolutionizing the refining industry with its plan to build multiple smaller, cost-effective, clean-tech refineries across the country, each governed by state and local regulations. This innovative strategy is designed to bypass the lengthy regulatory hurdles and inefficiencies associated with traditional, centralized mega-refineries. By focusing on smaller, more agile facilities like the Davis Refinery in North Dakota, Meridian aims to optimize logistical operations by locating refineries near major trucking and rail corridors.
