ANDRITZ to Develop Carbon Capture Facility for Westenergy in Finland

The international technology group ANDRITZ has been chosen to undertake the front-end engineering design (FEED) for a major carbon capture unit at Westenergy's waste-to-energy facility in Mustasaari, Finland.

This project will play a crucial role in advancing decarbonization and promoting the circular economy.

The order was placed by ECCU Ltd, a joint venture formed by Westenergy Ltd, CPC Finland Oy, and funds overseen by Prime Capital AG. The objective is to capture all the carbon dioxide from the flue gases at the Mustasaari waste-to-energy plant, which produces district heating and electricity from sorted, non-recyclable municipal waste. The captured CO2 will be liquefied, with a significant portion allocated for the production of carbon-neutral synthetic e-fuels.

As the FEED contractor, ANDRITZ will enhance the carbon capture plant concept and develop the design documentation needed for the joint venture's final investment decision. The concept will emphasize the optimal integration of the carbon capture process with the waste-to-energy plant, aiming to maximize heat utilization and the recycling of residues in a closed-loop system.

The joint venture aims to make a decision on the project's implementation in early 2025.

The carbon captured at Westenergy's plant will be used in a power-to-x facility planned for construction in Kristinestad, Finland, where it will be combined with green hydrogen to produce synthetic e-fuel. ANDRITZ also conducted the FEED for the green hydrogen plant associated with the Kristinestad project.
