AkzoNobel, a global leader in paints and coatings, has launched a waterborne basecoat for vehicle repair that will enhance bodyshop productivity and performance. The product is called Sikkens Autowave Optima and saves substantial time and cost while minimizing environmental impact.

This next-generation basecoat is a single-visit application which drastically reduces process time by upto 50% compared to traditional methods. Beyond the significant time savings, Autowave Optima contributes to a more sustainable refinishing process. The reduced booth time translates directly into energy savings and a remarkable decrease in carbon emissions, both estimated to be up to 60%.

The body paint has a high pigmentation that allows for perfect coverage with just 1.5 layers of paint. This efficient use of material results in average savings of approximately 15%, further contributing to cost-effectiveness for bodyshops.

Autowave Optima's versatility is another key advantage. It is designed to handle any type of repair, from minor touch-ups to extensive collision damage, and can perform reliably in any climate.

"The development of this one-stop application basecoat is a step-change for the car refinishes industry," said Patrick Bourguignon, Director of AkzoNobel’s Automotive and Specialty Coatings business in the company wide presser released. He emphasized that Autowave Optima directly addresses the critical challenges faced by bodyshops today, including the pressing need for increased sustainability, improved efficiency, and the ongoing skills shortage.

Bourguignon further highlights AkzoNobel's commitment to understanding and meeting the evolving needs of its customers. "The launch of this new generation product demonstrates how focused we are on understanding the needs of our customers and supplying the best solutions – both now and in the future – to support bodyshop productivity and performance," he states.

The development of Autowave Optima is a testament to AkzoNobel’s dedication to innovation. The company’s researchers, scientists, technical teams, and sales teams collaborated closely with select customers throughout the development process, rigorously testing and refining the new basecoat for both the Sikkens and Lesonal brands. This collaborative approach ensured that the final product met the real-world demands of bodyshops.

The global rollout of Autowave Optima will commence in select markets over the coming months. This launch is eagerly anticipated by bodyshops seeking to enhance their operations, reduce their environmental footprint, and improve their bottom line. AkzoNobel, renowned for its high-quality coatings and cutting-edge technologies, continues to solidify its position as a leading provider of solutions for the automotive industry. The company's comprehensive offerings, including digital color tools and software, further empower collision repairers and commercial vehicle refinishers to optimize their efficiency and achieve superior results.
