Aker Solutions, in partnership with PETRONAS Carigali Sdn. Bhd., MISC Bhd, and Clean Energy System Inc., has announced the signing of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) during the ONS Conference 2024 in Stavanger, Norway, on August 27th. This MOU initiates a pilot project for the Zero Emission Power Station (ZEUS), an innovative energy solution that uses advanced oxyfuel combustion technology to capture and store CO2 emissions instantly.

Jo Krabbe, Executive Vice President of Power Solutions at Aker Solutions, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "We're excited to bring ZEUS to life alongside our partners. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in our mission to solve energy challenges using innovative technology."

The ZEUS technology is designed to convert high CO2 natural gas into dispatchable power while capturing 100% of the CO2 emissions. The captured CO2 is either injected into a reservoir for permanent storage or used to enhance oil and gas production before being permanently stored. A key innovation of the ZEUS technology is its ability to operate under elevated pressures, allowing for more compact and simplified process equipment. This feature not only enhances CO2 management but also offers potential cost savings.

ZEUS is poised to deliver zero-emission, affordable, and reliable power, making it a critical bridge technology in the transition to a more sustainable energy landscape. Another distinctive aspect of oxyfuel combustion is its capacity to burn untreated gas directly from the well, including gas with up to 90% CO2. This capability opens up the possibility of utilizing gas reserves that would otherwise be considered uneconomical to develop.

As global power demand continues to rise, ZEUS has the potential to play a pivotal role in the shift towards more sustainable energy solutions. The MOU signatories are committed to ensuring the success of the ZEUS pilot project. After the technology is fully demonstrated, the partners intend to expand ZEUS to address rising energy demands and aid in the shift to a renewable energy mix. MISC is particularly focused on adapting this technology for maritime use, making it available on dedicated floating units.

The ZEUS pilot project marks a major advancement toward sustainable and cost-effective energy production, and Aker Solutions, along with its partners, is enthusiastic about its potential impact on the industry.

Aker Solutions provides integrated solutions, products, and services to the global energy industry. The company facilitates low-carbon oil and gas production while developing renewable solutions to address future energy needs. By merging innovative digital technologies with reliable project execution, Aker Solutions accelerates the shift toward sustainable energy production.
