Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), and Microsoft announced on November 6 that they have collaborated to drive up the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and low-carbon solutions. The partnership aims to accelerate the energy transition and minimize environmental impact.
The companies will explore powering Microsoft's data centres with renewable energy sourced from Masdar. This initiative aligns with Microsoft's commitment to sustainable operations and reduces its carbon footprint.
AI will be leveraged to advance carbon capture, storage, and utilization projects, as well as low-carbon ammonia and hydrogen production. ADNOC will utilize AI to enhance operational efficiency, reduce methane emissions, and strengthen biodiversity monitoring across its operations.
This collaboration builds upon the insights from the "Powering Possible: AI and Energy for a Sustainable Future" report, co-authored by the three companies. The report emphasizes the critical role of AI in accelerating the energy transition.
By combining ADNOC's expertise in the energy sector, Masdar's focus on renewable energy, and Microsoft's advanced AI capabilities, the partnership aims to achieve significant breakthroughs in sustainable energy solutions.
Talking about the collaboration, the Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber said, "AI is an era-defining innovation. By collaborating to solve AI's near-term challenges, we can also unlock AI's long-term benefits across the energy value chain – helping to secure a sustainable and prosperous future for generations to come."
Vice Chair and President of Microsoft Brad Smith echoed the same sentiments and said, "This new era calls on us to do two things at once: meet the AI moment while transitioning to a more sustainable economy."
CEO of Masdar Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said, "AI will play a key role in accelerating the energy transition. We look forward to working with ADNOC, Microsoft and other key partners, to help AI achieve its potential by delivering clean energy to the data centers that will power the AI future."
This strategic collaboration signifies a major step towards a more sustainable future, leveraging the power of AI to address global energy challenges and environmental concerns.
