Two people have died, and several others have sustained serious injuries following a devastating accident at the Flemløse Biogas plant, located in Glamsbjerg on Funen Island in Denmark. The local police confirmed the fatalities and reported that emergency services have been on-site since the incident occurred on Tuesday evening.
According to the police, the accident took place around 6pm local time on November 26, and emergency response teams, including police, fire rescue units, and health authorities, were quickly mobilized to the scene. Rescue operations are ongoing, as authorities continue to search the area for additional victims, as there are concerns that more people may be trapped or injured.
"The authorities can confirm that two people have died, while several others are seriously or moderately injured. Rescue efforts are continuing," the local police said in a press release.
Preliminary investigations suggest the accident occurred during work involving one of the plant's silos, which may have collapsed. A witness who spoke to the local media claimed that the silo’s collapse triggered a large-scale rescue operation, involving multiple police cars, emergency rescue units, and even a helicopter. The witness described the scene as chaotic, with numerous emergency vehicles converging on the location.
Christian Stenskrog, the manager of Flemløse Biogas, confirmed the accident in an interview. Stenskrog, visibly shaken by the tragic event, stated that there are typically three employees working at the plant, but he refrained from offering additional comments. He expressed his shock and concern over the incident but acknowledged that the investigation was ongoing.
Emergency teams have been working throughout the evening and into the following hours, searching the premises to ensure that all affected individuals are accounted for. Authorities are also collaborating with relevant agencies, including the Danish Working Environment Authority, to determine the exact cause of the accident and to assess any safety violations that may have contributed to the incident.
Although not confirmed officially, the plant might be shut down for the foreseeable week.
